Impact on our biodiversity

As essential pollinators, bees play a key role in maintaining biodiversity. By pollinating flowers in search of nectar and pollen, they ensure the reproduction of plants and flowers, on which many plant and animal species depend. Thanks to their fascinating work, our gardens teem with life, offering a colorful spectacle to our visitors.

The installation of nine beehives on our estate demonstrates our commitment to the preservation of local biodiversity. These beehives are not just self-sufficient structures; they symbolize our willingness to take active steps to support the ecosystem around us.

By hosting these hives, we are helping to preserve bee populations, which are essential to the pollination of many plant species in our region. Bees play a vital role in preserving plant diversity and maintaining the ecological balance.

Honey from Les Sources de Cheverny

Honey, the sweet treasure produced by the captivating work of bees, is the very embodiment of nature’s generosity. Here, it takes on different shades and flavours throughout the seasons, reflecting the richness of our local flora.

In spring, the delicate flowers, dandelion and blackthorn give a honey that’s clear and sweet, evoking the first sunny days of the season. Then, in May, under the shade of blossoming acacias, our honey takes on a brighter robe. Finally, in summer, a more intense, full-bodied honey plays with the palate of gourmands, capturing the sunny aromas of warmer days.

Chef Pierre Frindel honors his dishes and desserts by creatively incorporating artisanal honey harvested from the estate’s beehives, adding a unique and gourmet touch to his culinary creations.

Discover our beekeeping activity and get to the heart of our hives

For those interested in discovering the mysteries of beekeeping, we offer an immersive experience guided by our passionate beekeeper, Rafaèle. In the enchanting setting of our estate, young and old are invited to dress up as beekeepers and plunge into the heart of our hives.

In this unique activity, Rafaèle reveals the secrets of bee life, from the birth of the swarm to the harvesting of the precious honey. Participants will have the privilege of familiarizing themselves with these wonderful creatures, understanding their vital role in the balance of nature.

In particular, you can learn a little more about the distinction made between each hive. The hives have been painted in distinctive colors – yellow, red, pink, blue and purple – to make it easier for their little tenants to find their home. After foraging to its heart’s content, the bee doesn’t randomly return to the first hive that comes along, but belongs precisely to a colony and therefore to a hive. And when a garden is home to several hives, as we are, it’s important to distinguish them by color.

Finally, you can complete the experience with a tasting of honey from Les Sources de Cheverny.

What motivated you to take this role for the 2023/2024 season?

I believe that businesses are key to driving change. It’s very encouraging to see a prestigious establishment like Les Sources de Caudalie taking steps to reduce its carbon footprint.

What do you do with the staff?

I engage with them during meetings, sharing my knowledge about the state of climate change and biodiversity, discussing what I’ve observed during my reports, and focusing on issues relevant to luxury hospitality. I then invite them to ask questions. It’s always a pleasure to share my experiences with professionals and collaboratively identify actionable areas.

What kind of students are they?

The staff at Les Sources are very interested in environmental issues and eager to change, while being aware of the luxury hotel’s inherent impact. I support this kind of positive dynamic, especially when it resonates across the team.

What actions can be taken for more responsible travel?

Firstly, avoid flying. Personally, I haven’t flown for vacations in five years; my last flight was to Iceland in 2019. Since then, I only choose destinations accessible by boat, rail, or road. However, flying doesn’t have to mean abandoning eco-responsibility. Simple actions can significantly reduce one’s carbon footprint: eat less meat and fish, avoid single-use items, choose greener transport options, use air conditioning and heating moderately, and prefer off-thebeaten-path attractions!

June 2023 marks a momentous turning point for the Bordeaux Palace des Vignes. Les Sources de Caudalie is proud to announce their European Ecolabel certification, fruit of twenty years’ commitment to green tourism. The hotel is welcoming Hugo Clément as the patron of its Sources Académie, as a result of collective effort rooted in ongoing training.

For the Tourbier couple – founders of the establishment – eco-responsibility is the primary value in their definition of travel. Alongside them, the entire Sources de Caudalie team is committed to sustainable tourism. Here, luxury is not ostentatious, but the service is tailor-made and respectful of mankind and nature.

Les Sources de Caudalie are determined to use conscious consumption and sustainable development as guiding principles in making decisions and taking action.

In Martillac, a single mantra resounds: reduce, recycle, reuse.

During his visit to France on 22 September 2023, King Charles III and Queen Camilla honoured us with their presence at Château Smith Haut Lafitte in Martillac.

Château Smith Haut Lafitte, a Grand Cru Classé from the Graves appellation and part of the AOC Pessac-Léognan, was carefully chosen by the Crown for its commitment to organic and biodynamic farming — a cause close to His Majesty’s heart. This visit was an opportunity to observe the production techniques implemented on the estate since the 1990s by Florence and Daniel Cathiard, owners of Château Smith Haut Lafitte.

Our Hotels Les Sources live in harmony with nature and uphold a philosophy that respects all forms of life. Rooted in a responsible vision, every purchase is made with awareness: the origin of everything bought is known, and above all, its recycling or potential reuse is considered.

Purity in Every Room

In each of our rooms within the Vineyard Hotels, you can quench your thirst with our own spring water, pure, filtered, and served in glass bottles that are immediately sterilised after use. This initiative aims to reduce our ecological footprint and encourage more responsible consumption.

Respectful Shower Care

In our bathrooms, our shower products are provided in containers made from corn-starch plastic, which is fully recycled and recyclable. These containers are reusable: we disinfect and refill them regularly. Thus, every action helps to minimise our environmental impact.

SapoCycle: Recycling Our Solid Soaps

Our used soaps, on the other hand, are given a second life through SapoCycle, an organisation that transforms and redistributes them for free to those in need. In 2022, 63 kilos of soap were recycled and redistributed from Les Sources de Caudalie, and this is just the beginning…

From the Garden to the Plate

Opened in 2014, the first vegetable garden at Les Sources de Caudalie was initially located next to La Grand’Vigne. A year later, it expanded and settled in the heart of the adjacent hotel park, giving birth to the Garden of Bees. Comprising a vegetable garden, an orchard, and a farm with about twenty laying hens, it supplies the hotel kitchens with fruits, vegetables, herbs, and eggs. The quality, traceability, and freshness of the products are thus guaranteed, while respecting the short supply chain. In addition to common varieties, the garden also grows rarer species, such as kale, elephant garlic, plant oysters, and black Russian tomatoes. On the other side, in the orchard, fruit trees, strawberries, raspberries, and other mulberries thrive, protected by beehives that ensure an abundant harvest throughout the year. Free from pesticides and treated with products certified for organic farming, the Garden of Bees perfectly embodies the eco-responsible approach of the Palace des Vignes.

Elise Company: Recycling Our Waste

We sort and recycle all types of waste through the Elise company (cardboard, paper, plastic, wood, aluminium, glass). A detailed monthly report on the tonnage is sent to us. This recycling creates stable jobs for people facing difficulties in integration, often due to disabilities.

La Cravate Solidaire: Giving a Second Life to Our Uniforms

La Cravate Solidaire collects our old uniforms and donates them to people in precarious situations so they can attend job interviews in the best possible conditions.

Active Participation from Our Guests

As for our guests, they also contribute to nature conservation by cycling around the estate or by limiting the frequency of towel changes if they wish. Encouraging these small individual actions helps to foster a culture of environmental responsibility among our visitors.
